The sustainable improvement in the quality of life in cities was the subject of the first international conference “Towards A Better Quality Of Life", which took place in El Gouna, Egypt on the 24-26 November 2017 and was sponsored by Wilo.

With its high-efficiency products, Wilo helps cities and municipalities to develop sustainability and is actively engaged in fostering an intensive discourse between business, politics and civil society. The aim is to collaborate to improve living conditions for urban populations in a sustainable manner and to curb the negative ecological consequences of urban growth.

More than half of the global population currently lives in cities. According to UN estimates, this could rise to two-thirds by the year 2050 – and Egypt is no exception. Rapid urbanisation around the world is one of the largest challenges of our time because climate change does not stop at national borders and its effects are not limited to individual policies, sectors or social groups.

The city of the future should be safe, resilient and sustainable – today, however, the reality often is quite different: smog, noise and pollution is part of daily life in megacities. Around 18 million people live in Cairo alone. “Our struggle for global sustainability will be won or lost in cities", said the eighth UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, as he underscored the urgent need for action.
