What is a hot water circulation pump?

Common centralised hot water systems are designed in a way that cold water in the pipes needs to be drained before freshly heated water reaches the tap. As water sometimes has to flow through long pipelines before reaching the desired outlet, patience is often required.

This is where a hot water circulation pump comes into play: it is an electrically operated pump that is integrated into the hot water system of a house and ensures that hot water is immediately available without having to wait long or waste precious drinking water.

Its main task is to continuously circulate the hot water through the pipes to ensure immediate availability at every tap in the house.

How does a hot water circulation pump work?

How does a hot water circulation pump work?

The process starts at the water heater. Cold water is heated and flows to the point of use, such as the sink or shower. When you turn off you tap or shower, the circulation pump moves the warm water in the pipes back to the hot water storage tank. Additionally, the pump continuously circulates the water within the pipe system, ensuring a consistent temperature throughout. This keeps the water constantly in motion, preventing it from cooling down.

Modern circulation pumps have various features to minimise energy consumption. An integrated thermostat regulates the pump's power according to the desired water temperature. This prevents the pump from running unnecessarily and wasting energy. Additionally, many circulation pumps are equipped with programmable timers that activate the pump only during specific times of the day, such as mornings and evenings when the demand for hot water is higher.

FAQs

Do I need a hot water circulating pump?

A hot water circulating pump is typically used in systems where there is a long distance between the water heater and the taps or fixtures. It helps to circulate hot water through the pipes, reducing the wait time for hot water and minimising water wastage. If it takes a long time for hot water to reach your taps or if you are concerned about water wastage, a hot water circulating pump can be beneficial. Consult with a professional plumber to get expert advice.

How much energy does a hot water circulating pump use?

Hot water circulating pumps provide near-instantaneous hot water, minimizing the waiting time and ensuring hot water is readily available when needed. This efficient delivery of hot water not only saves time and energy but also eliminates water wastage that typically occurs while waiting for hot water. Additionally, these pumps consume 60-75% less electricity than traditional hot water systems. By reducing both energy consumption andwater wastage, these pumps are an eco-friendly choice for households. Installing a water circulating pump allows you to enjoy the convenience of instant hot water while minimising your environmental impact.

Why should you run the tap after returning from vacation?

Running the tap after vacation is important to flush out stagnant water from the pipes and reduce the risk of bacterial growth, such as legionella. Stagnant water in the pipes during your absence can promote the growth of bacteria. By running the tap for a few minutes, fresh water is flushed into the pipes, removing possible contaminants. It is advisable to take this measure to improve water quality and reduce the risk of health issues when using the water upon your return. Make sure the hot water temperature in your hot water system is not below 55 degrees Celsius, as this inhibits the growth of legionella.
