Storm Water Pumping Stations

Storm water pumping stations are permanent installations designed to manage excess rainwater during heavy storms, especially in urban areas where natural drainage is insufficient. These stations collect storm runoff from drainage networks and pump it into rivers, canals, reservoirs, or designated discharge points.

Centrifugal pumps in storm water pumping stations are engineered to handle sudden peak inflows, ensuring uninterrupted operation during intense rainfall events. Automated control systems and level sensors enable real-time response to changing water levels, preventing urban flooding and infrastructure damage.

Functions of Storm Water Pumping Stations

  • Rapid handling of storm runoff during peak rainfall
  • Protection of roads, subways, and underground utilities
  • Controlled discharge into natural water bodies
  • Integration with smart monitoring and automation systems

Emergency Pumping

Emergency pumping systems provide immediate flood response during natural disasters, infrastructure breakdowns, or unexpected water ingress. These systems are critical for disaster management agencies, municipalities, and industrial facilities that require rapid water removal to protect lives and assets.

Emergency pumping solutions typically include portable, trailer-mounted, or containerized centrifugal pumps that can be deployed quickly to affected locations. Their flexibility and ease of operation make them ideal for temporary flood control and crisis management situations.

Advantages of Emergency Pumping Systems

  • Rapid deployment and quick commissioning
  • High-capacity water removal in critical situations
  • Minimal civil infrastructure requirements
  • Suitable for disaster relief and temporary applications

Retention Ponds & Reservoirs

Retention ponds and reservoirs are used to temporarily store excess stormwater or treated wastewater, reducing the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. These systems play an important role in urban flood management by regulating runoff and enabling controlled water release.

Centrifugal pumps are used to transfer water into and out of retention ponds and reservoirs, supporting groundwater recharge, irrigation reuse, and industrial applications. Properly managed retention systems also contribute to sustainable water resource management.

Benefits of Retention Ponds & Reservoir Pumping

  • Reduces peak storm runoff and flood risk
  • Enables controlled release of excess water
  • Supports groundwater recharge and water reuse
  • Enhances long-term urban water resilience

Safeguarding Mumbai from Monsoon Flooding with High-Capacity Storm Water Pumping Solutions

Mumbai, originally a cluster of seven islands, faces severe flooding challenges during the monsoon season due to its coastal geography, intense rainfall, and high tide conditions. With an average annual rainfall of 2,420 mm—and daily extremes reaching up to 400 mm—gravity-based drainage often fails when heavy rains coincide with high tides. This leads to large-scale inundation of low-lying areas, affecting homes, businesses, transportation networks, and critical infrastructure, resulting in significant economic losses and risks to human life.

To combat this recurring challenge, Wilo axial submersible pumps have been deployed across four major storm water pumping stations—Haji Ali, Britannia, Lovegrove, and Cleveland. Nearly thirty high-capacity pumps operate continuously during the monsoon season, protecting South Mumbai from flooding. Wilo India has played a key role in this project from the design stage through execution, ensuring reliable performance, operational efficiency, and long-term service support for these critical flood-mitigation systems.

Large-Scale Sewerage & Storm Water Pumping Systems

Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is responsible for the planning, development, and maintenance of the city’s civic infrastructure, including sewerage and drainage systems. Large parts of Kolkata operate on a combined sewerage network developed over more than a century, which faces increasing stress due to population growth, aging assets, and low-lying terrain prone to flooding and prolonged waterlogging.

Under the SD-32 project, a high-capacity combined sewerage and storm water pumping station has been constructed to manage both dry weather flow and storm water flow. The pumping systems are designed to operate continuously under demanding urban conditions, handling high flow rates, mixed sewage, and storm water during peak monsoon events. The installation supports effective flood mitigation, improved sewage conveyance, and enhanced reliability of the city’s drainage network.

Urban sewerage and drainage applications impose severe hydraulic and mechanical demands on pumping equipment due to continuous operation, high inflow variability, suspended solids, and extreme weather conditions. The pumps installed under the SD-32 project are engineered with robust hydraulic designs, non-clog impellers, heavy-duty bearings, and high-efficiency motors to ensure reliable, long-term performance in such environments.

From an operational perspective, the SD-32 pumping station plays a critical role in improving drainage efficiency and reducing waterlogging in the Mukundapur area. The successful commissioning and operation of the pumping systems demonstrate capability in delivering engineered pumping solutions for large-scale urban sewerage and storm water infrastructure projects.

MCGM IRLA Storm Water Pumping Station

The IRLA Storm Water Pumping Station Project, executed for the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), is a critical urban infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing Mumbai’s flood management capabilities. The project focuses on efficient evacuation of stormwater from a large catchment area during peak monsoon conditions, ensuring protection against urban flooding.

Wilo secured this prestigious replacement project by leveraging its strong track record in supplying axial flow pumps for multiple MCGM storm water schemes. The project involved replacing existing pumps while ensuring complete compatibility with the existing civil structure, pump bays, and hydraulic system—without requiring structural modifications.
