Don't let a broken heating system leave you in the cold!

It's time to take control of your home's heating system! Discover our expert-recommended seven-step guide to troubleshoot and fix heating issues quickly and efficiently.

Why is my central heating not working?

There could be a number of reasons why your central heating system is not working, including an interruption in supply of gas, electricity or water. It could be that your boiler is not working, or it could be that your room thermostats are set too low and your boiler doesn't know to heat up your home. Try our simple checklist below if your central heating is not turning on.

If you have a gas-fired central heating system and it's not working there are a number of simple things you can check before you call an emergency plumber:

1. Check if you have supply of gas, electricity and water. If there is a problem with the supply these elements it will affect your central heating system. Contact your energy provider to resolve the issue

2. Check your radiators. Is there any warmth in them at all? If there is, this indicates that your boiler is working fine and that you probably need to bleed your radiators to remove any air from the central heating system

3. Check the room thermostats are turned up. If they are too low the heating system will not kick into action. Check the system by turning up your thermostats and listening out for the boiler firing up

4. Check that your boiler is switched on. Is the digital display switched on? Is there an indicator on the boiler which suggests it has power?

5. Check your boiler pressure. This should be set to at least 1 bar. If the pressure is lower than 1 bar you will need to top the boiler pressure. Check your boiler's user guide for instructions on how to do this

6. Check the boiler's pilot light hasn't gone out. If the light has gone out, check your boiler's user guide to find out how to restart the pilot light

7. Check your central heating pump is working. Can you hear it working? Is there a power indicator on the pump and is it signalling that it has power?

8. Check if the system is working at all. Perhaps the emergency switch was accidentally activated and the heating needs to be turned back on.

9. Check whether you have activated a timer or night setback. If the times are set incorrectly here, the settings must be corrected.
