Improve water pressure at home: identify the causes of low water pressure and find the right solutions for greater comfort.

Water pressure – comfort at every level

Imagine this: the day starts, but instead of a strong flow of water, only a weak trickle comes from the shower. It is hard to rinse the shampoo out of your hair, the children are getting impatient – and as soon as someone turns on the tap in the kitchen, the flow becomes even weaker.

On the upper floors, it feels as though the water barely reaches at all. Filling the bathtub takes forever. Even in the garden, the sprinkler stays still – the water pressure is simply not enough.

Low water pressure is an everyday problem that wastes time and causes unnecessary frustration – but fortunately, there is a suitable solution.

With a modern, variable-speed pressure-boosting system, you can get things flowing properly again. It helps to keep the water pressure as constant as possible, even when several outlets are being used at the same time – within the system’s designed performance range. The system automatically detects when water is being used and switches on a pump that builds up and regulates the required pressure to match demand. This all happens automatically in the background.

Wilo’s compact, quiet and intelligent solutions provide consistent water pressure and operate in line with actual demand: the pump is activated whenever water is drawn.

Consistent. Powerful. Comfortable.

Why is the water pressure so low?

When a pressure-boosting system can make all the difference.

In many residential areas – especially in streets at higher elevations or in outlying locations – the water pressure supplied from the public network is naturally limited. This is because the water supplier regulates the pressure so that it is sufficient for as many households as possible without risking damage to the pipework. In addition, at peak times – such as in the morning or evening, when many households are showering, washing or drawing water at the same time – the supply pressure can drop significantly for a short period. Maintenance work or leaks in the local mains network can also mean that the pressure at the property connection is permanently too low. A properly sized pressure-boosting system can stabilise the incoming pressure within its performance limits – even when demand fluctuates.

Pressure losses can also occur within the home, for example when several outlets are being used at the same time. If the shower, dishwasher and a tap are all running together, the available pressure is often not enough to supply every outlet evenly – and the water flow becomes noticeably weaker. A pressure-boosting pump increases the pressure and helps to maintain comfort.

Another common scenario is a weak water supply on upper floors or over long pipe runs to the garden. In multi-storey houses in particular, the pressure drops with each floor – until hardly any water reaches the top floor. A properly specified pump can compensate for height differences and longer pipe runs and keep the pressure stable.

If your situation does not match any of the examples above, there may be other causes behind the low water pressure – such as limescale build-up or narrowing in the pipework, pipe diameters that are too small, or an incorrectly adjusted pressure-reducing valve directly after the mains connection. In such cases, a qualified installer can inspect the system on site and recommend the right solution.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about water pressure and pressure boosting in the home and garden

When is water pressure considered "too low"?

Average household water pressure is typically between 3 and 5 bar. If it falls permanently below 2 bar, this can become very noticeable in everyday life – for example through a weak shower flow, long bath-filling times or uneven water flow when several outlets are being used at once. If this happens regularly, the pressure should be measured and checked by a qualified installer.

How can I tell whether my home needs a pressure-boosting system?

Typical signs include noticeably low water pressure in the shower or when filling the bathtub, as well as a drop in pressure when several outlets are used at the same time. An installer – or you yourself – can check the available inlet pressure using the pressure gauge on your domestic water system or pressure-reducing valve and determine whether pressure boosting would be beneficial. A visual inspection of the pressure-reducing valve, pipe diameters and fittings can also help identify the cause.

Does the pressure-boosting system have to run continuously?

No – modern systems such as the Wilo-ISAR MODH1-E-1 operate according to demand. They automatically detect when water is being used and only switch on when needed. As soon as water is no longer being drawn, the pump switches off automatically. This reduces unnecessary running time and supports demand-driven operation.
