Planning to use a borehole?
Using your own borehole water in the garden
A professionally constructed borehole can provide water for a range of garden applications, such as irrigation. This requires a sufficient supply of water of the right quality, as well as permission for use where required. It is also important to choose a correctly sized pump and ensure professional installation and regular maintenance.
Borehole pumps – the right technology for deep water sources
Borehole pumps, also known as deep-well pumps, are used whenever water needs to be pumped from greater depths – typically from boreholes. They are designed to deliver the required water pressure within the characteristic curve specified in the data sheet. Due to their slim design, and depending on the model and system set-up, they can pump water from depths of 20, 30 or more metres.
For domestic use, pumps with a diameter of 3 or 4 inches are typically used. The exact specification depends on factors such as the groundwater depth and the required flow rate. Depending on the pump design, control system and application, a pressure tank may also be used. A correctly sized tank can help reduce the switching frequency of start-stop cycles under normal operating conditions.
As borehole drilling depends on a number of factors – including geological conditions, permit requirements and water quality – we recommend contacting a qualified borehole specialist at an early stage. Professional planning and installation help ensure that technical, geological and legal considerations are taken into account from the outset.
Depending on the version, a borehole pump set may include the following components:
- the pump itself
- an electrical connection cable
- a pressure switch for automatic on/off control as required
- a guy rope for retrieval during servicing
- motor protection
