Karang Raja Irrigation.

For the farmers of Karang Raja, farming has always been closely tied to the rhythm of the rain. During the rainy season, water was available for their fields. But when the dry season arrived, access to water became a major challenge. With limited irrigation infrastructure, farmers could no longer rely on a consistent water supply, often limiting them to just one harvest a year.

Yet, the challenge was not simply the absence of water. A water source was available nearby, but it needed to be transported approximately 1.29 kilometres to reach the agricultural fields. Without a reliable way to move this water, much of the farmland remained vulnerable to dry conditions, limiting farmers' opportunities to cultivate their land throughout the year.

For the community of Karang Raja, the challenge was clear:

How could water be made available when and where it was needed most?

To help address this need, PT Bukit Asam (PTBA) initiated a CSR program to support the development of a solar-powered irrigation system for the local farming community. As part of the project, Wilo Indonesia delivered the pumping solution, integrating reliable pumping technology with solar energy to provide an efficient and sustainable source of water for agricultural irrigation. The collaboration highlights how innovative technology and community-focused initiatives can help strengthen local agriculture and sustainable water access.

Wilo Solutions

  • Application: Irrigation
  • Pump: Submersible Sewage Pump
  • Capacity & Head: 20 L/s & 30 m
  • 60 Solar Panels, with total: 16,500 Wp

At the heart of the system is a Wilo submersible pump, designed to reliably transport water from the water source to the agricultural fields. Powered by solar energy, the pumping system can make use of abundant sunlight, particularly during the dry season when irrigation demand is at its highest.

The system now supports irrigation across approximately 35 hectares of agricultural land, benefiting around 121 farmers in Karang Raja Village. With a more reliable water supply, farmers are no longer solely dependent on rainfall and can cultivate their fields more consistently throughout the year.

As a result, farmers in Karang Raja can now harvest up to three times a year, compared with only once a year before the irrigation system was introduced.

Beyond increasing opportunities for cultivation, the solar-powered pumping system also offers a more sustainable way to deliver water to the fields. By using renewable solar energy to power the pump, the system reduces reliance on conventional fuel or grid electricity for irrigation, helping make agricultural water supply more efficient and sustainable in the long term.

For the farmers of Karang Raja, access to water is no longer limited by the arrival of rain. With reliable pumping powered by the sun, water can reach the fields when it is needed—helping create more opportunities for productive and resilient agriculture.
