Toshka Project strengthens Egypt's food security by providing innovative water management solutions, crucial for reducing wheat imports and mitigating the impacts of global crises.
Egypt. Wilo Egypt has recently been awarded the Toshka Project's latest phases of development, which comprise zones O and R, worth 15 million euros. Wilo is set to supply 168 low to medium voltage split case pumps, which will be used to pump water from Lake Nasser for wheat irrigation, with the assembly production taking place in the UAE factory. The project is set to assist in strengthening Egypt's food security. Wilo delivered 117 assembled split case pumps in the UAE for the initial phases of the project in 2021, which constituted phases three and four, costing five million euros. The project's total revenue from last year, combined with its latest awarded phases this year so far, has now raised the overall value to 20 million euros.
Jens Dallendoerfer, Senior Vice President, Sales Region Emerging Markets, said: “The Toshka Project has given us an excellent opportunity to showcase and demonstrate our global and local capabilities in this area, as our solutions and services are well-suited to this strategic project. The project, which is part of Egypt's Vision 2030 and is overseen by Egypt's President and the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, has the potential to reduce Egypt's wheat imports to just a fourth of the total consumption. We believe the project will further reinforce Wilo’s position as a modern and reliable solutions provider in the Egyptian and MENA markets.”
Yasser Nagi, Managing Director, Wilo Middle East and Egypt, and Group Sales Director MENA Region, stated: “The Toshka Project, which is reported to be the largest of its kind in the region, strives to achieve self-sufficiency in wheat, a basic commodity that has been severely impacted by the Russia-Ukraine war. Toshka was designed to transfer water from Lake Nasser through a 200-meter canal, which passes through the Toshka Depression to the Farafra Oasis. The initiative was of extreme significance as the crisis had affected the global wheat supply, especially as the two countries in conflict are few of the largest wheat exporters worldwide. Moreover, over the past few years, Egypt has also relied heavily on Russia and Ukraine for about 80 per cent of its wheat imports, as per reports. In line with this vision, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi also called for a speedy restoration of the Toshka lands at the project's inauguration in December 2021, in order to produce around 500,000 tons of wheat.”
Amgad Elfishawy, Commercial Director, Wilo Egypt and Libya, said: “The Toshka Project was initiated by the Egyptian government in order for the country to be self-sufficient in wheat. Wilo aimed to assist in this endeavor by delivering 117 Split Case Pumps in 2021, which allowed for improved water management across the Toshka lands. We truly believe our contribution to the initiative would strengthen our position and accelerate market expansion, thereby enabling us to secure the project with Toshka Zones O and R for 168 additional SCPs for 15 million euros."
Wilo's advanced solutions played a key role in reaffirming the success of the Toshka Project. The positive results have further strengthened Wilo's position in the market, solidifying its status as one of the trusted and reliable solutions providers in the region.
