Since 2018, the Wilo-Foundation has been supporting the Master degree course “Water Engineering” at TU Berlin Campus El Gouna in Egypt, a satellite campus of Technische Universität Berlin. The programme is especially designed for international students who have already gathered some work experience.

During a trip to Egypt from 7 to 9 February 2019, representatives of the Wilo-Foundation, namely Hans-Jörg Bullinger and Evi Hoch, had the opportunity to visit Campus El Gouna together with Yasser Nagi and Fouad Ahmed of Wilo Egypt. The Wilo-Foundation supports the “water scholarship holders” during their Master theses. All Master theses provide input and generate knowledge on water management in Egypt. With the financial support of the Wilo-Foundation, five scholarship holders from the Water Engineering Department of Campus El Gouna will have the opportunity to write their Master thesis this summer at TU Berlin in Germany, enabling them to engage in exchange with others, both in the academic field and intercultural settings, and get to know the German capital.

Scholarship as achknowledgement

In the context of the “German-Egyptian Water Days”, which had the motto “Science meets industry” this year, an expert conference was organised on 9 February 2019 in the “Audimax” of Campus El Gouna. For this conference, ten students had been chosen to present the topics of their Master theses and give participants an insight into their studies. The audience included, among others, professors and researchers of TU Berlin and members of the German Water Partnership Network and of the Wilo-Foundation. After the presentations, the expert jury selected five students who were then awarded the “Water Master Thesis Scholarship” by Evi Hoch, Wilo-Foundation. Evi Hoch was highly satisfied with the outcome of the initiative: “It was a great pleasure for me to meet this international and extremely ambitious group of future water scientists. It is important that we listen to their ideas and learn about their motivation and plans for the future. For scholarship holders, the scholarship means more than just financial support. They also see it as an acknowledgment of their academic achievements so far, as a personal motivator and as an opportunity to expand their professional networks.”

Speakers at the expert conference included Yasser Nagi, Group Director Sales Area MENA, Wilo Middle East FZE, who talked about “Innovations in water transportation”, the Chairman of the Wilo-Foundation’s Board of Trustees Hans-Jörg Bullinger, who spoke on “Digitalisation as innovation driver for business excellence” and Evi Hoch, who shared information about the social engagement of the Wilo-Foundation.

Background:

In 2012, Technische Universität Berlin opened its satellite campus in El Gouna, Egypt, with three Master degree programmes: “Water Engineering”, “Energy Engineering” and “Urban Engineering”. In addition to acquiring theoretical knowledge, students also develop practical skills, especially via project activities in their respective fields.

On the TU Campus in El Gouna in Egypt, which was established by TU Berlin, students of the “Water Engineering” programme learn to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for tackling the various challenges in the wat
