Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Heriot-Watt University Dubai Campus has recently recognized Wilo, a leading manufacturer of pumps and pumping systems, for its generous contributions to the Mechanical Engineering department by naming the Fluid Mechanics section of the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory as “Wilo Pump Laboratory”. As part of the agreement, Wilo will equip the lab with a series of state-of-the-art pumps. In addition, Wilo will also provide a number of internship opportunities as well as give priority to Heriot-Watt University students for any potential entry level openings in the company.
“At Wilo, one of our five core values is ‘sustainable and responsible’ and key to this is ensuring that resources are preserved for the future and that our children will have the same opportunities tomorrow that we have today. Since our founding in 1872 in Dortmund, Germany and over the past 140 years that we have been operating across the world, we have had the opportunity to work with some of the brightest and most innovative engineers. I believe it is our duty to give back to the community and ensure that this tradition continues,” said Dr. Amer Mokbel, Managing Director at Wilo Middle East.
Commenting on the partnership, Dr. Mehdi Nazarinia, Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering – Fluid Mechanics/Energy at Heriot-Watt University Dubai Campus said, “This is another example of the University tying up with industry leaders to use cutting edge technology and equipment to educate and train our students. The agreement will allow the company to impart its expertise to students based in the United Arab Emirates who plan careers in the Mechanical Engineering fields. It is a particular milestone for the University and the opportunities this will provide students is exceptional.”
The refurbished laboratory which was unveiled at an event on October 12, 2015, will showcase ten of Wilo’s latest pumps. Notable among them are the Wilo TWI series of submersible pumps which are widely used for drinking water supply from boreholes, rainwater storage, irrigation and pressure boosting and the Wilo Split Case pumps; centrifugal axially split case pumps, available in single-stage and two-stage and designed for applications in municipal water supply, irrigation, building services, general industry and power stations.
In addition to making the investment in the laboratory, Wilo has also committed to hosting a series of on and off-campus events throughout the course of the academic year including site visits to Wilo’s facility in Jebel Ali, site visits to some of Wilo’s customers and technical presentations and workshops. But perhaps most significantly, Wilo will provide students from Heriot-Watt with the opportunity to intern in a number of departments at Wilo including engineering, marketing and finance as well as give graduating students from the University priority for any potential entry level positions at the company. “In my experience, there is no substitute for “hands on” training so I am extremely excited to give students the opportunity to work with the Wilo team and augment the world-class education that they are receiving at Heriot-Watt,” concluded Fouad Ahmed, Marketing Manager at Wilo Middle East.
