Anpara Power Station

Anpara Power Station, Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh

Anpara Power Station is one of India’s largest coal-fired thermal power plants, located in the Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh. The plant plays a critical role in meeting the base-load power demand of Northern India. Thermal power stations of this scale require extremely reliable and high-capacity cooling water systems to ensure safe and efficient operation of condensers, turbines, and auxiliary equipment.

To meet the substantial cooling water demand of the 1,200 MW power generation capacity, large vertical turbine (VT) pumps have been installed as part of the plant’s circulating water system. These pumps are designed to handle exceptionally high flow rates while maintaining stable hydraulic performance, ensuring uninterrupted cooling water supply under continuous base-load operating conditions. The pumping installation is a key contributor to the plant’s operational efficiency, reliability, and long-term performance.

Large Vertical Turbine Pumps for Cooling Water Application

Total Pumps: 5 Nos

Application: Cooling Water Circulation for Thermal Power Plant

Location: Anpara Power Station, Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh

Vertical turbine pumps are widely used in large thermal power plants due to their ability to efficiently handle very high volumes of cooling water drawn from rivers, reservoirs, or cooling water basins. Their vertical configuration allows deep sump installation with a compact footprint, making them ideal for high-capacity circulating water systems. The pumps installed at Anpara Power Station feature advanced hydraulic design optimized for high efficiency, contributing to reduced auxiliary power consumption and improved overall plant efficiency.

From an operational perspective, the robust mechanical design and high-efficiency hydraulics ensure reliable long-term operation under continuous duty cycles typical of base-load thermal power plants. The installation of multiple high-capacity VT pumps provides redundancy and operational flexibility, ensuring uninterrupted cooling water availability even during maintenance activities. This reference demonstrates the suitability of engineered vertical turbine pumping solutions for large-scale thermal power generation infrastructure.
