thermal power plant industrial building scenery

Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd

Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd

Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd (GMDC) operates the 2x125MW Akrimota Thermal Power Station (ATPS), a key energy generation facility in Mundra, Gujarat. The project involved a unique challenge: utilizing the pressure generated by the main Reverse Osmosis (RO) Feed pump to drive a second coupled pump, an energy recovery turbine, within the same motor. This innovation aimed to reduce motor power consumption by 30%, which would lead to significant energy savings and improved operational efficiency.

Wilo was tasked with the development and supply of custom pumping solutions that addressed the energy recovery needs of the plant while ensuring synchronization between both pumps. The solution involved replacing existing high-pressure pumps and installing specialized energy recovery pumps that met the customer’s requirements for optimal performance and energy savings.

Application & Pumps Used

RO Feed Pump & Energy Recovery System:

  • Application: Energy Recovery
  • Segment: Mining / Thermal Power

Pump Solutions Supplied:

  • High Pressure Feed Pump (Model: 1A PLURO-9Stg)
  • Energy Recovery Turbine Pump (Model: RN80-9STG)

Total Pumps Installed: 2

The pumping solution supplied to GMDC was engineered to meet the customer’s specific requirements for energy recovery and pump synchronization. The solution was designed to utilize the outlet pressure from the main RO Feed pump and transfer it to the energy recovery turbine. This innovative design allowed the turbine to recover power from the system, reducing the overall energy consumption of the motor by up to 30%.

Wilo’s custom-designed system, which involved replacing an existing 25-year-old Ingersoll Rand pump, was successfully commissioned at the Akrimota Thermal Power Station (ATPS). The High-Pressure Feed Pump (1A PLURO-9Stg) and Energy Recovery Turbine Pump (RN80-9STG) were coupled to operate with a single motor, enabling significant energy recovery.
