Moonidih Mines - Pump Replacement Project

Moonidih Mines - Pump Replacement Project

Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) operates the Moonidih mines, which play a critical role in coal production for India’s energy sector. The mine’s dewatering system, which utilized an old Poland-origin pump, had been running for years but was facing performance issues due to aging equipment and a lack of support for replacement parts. The existing system had a 450 m³/hr capacity at 600 meters head, but was struggling to meet the increasing demand for mine dewatering.

To address this challenge, BCCL required a pump replacement solution that would fit within the same physical space while maintaining or exceeding the performance of the existing pump. The challenge was not only to meet the required hydraulic performance but also to replace the pump without disrupting the operation.

Wilo was selected as the vendor due to its strong technical capabilities and proven expertise in handling high-performance pumping systems. The solution involved a high-efficiency pump replacement that met the project’s technical and operational requirements, providing a cost-effective, reliable solution for mine dewatering.

Wilo designed a customized solution to replace the existing pump while ensuring compatibility with the site’s constraints. The 8-stage pump model was chosen for its high performance and reliability in mining dewatering applications. Wilo’s pumps were able to match or exceed the performance of the existing equipment while fitting within the existing pump station layout.

The upgraded pumps operated efficiently, delivering consistent dewatering performance. The system also minimized operational disruptions and avoided major modifications to the existing infrastructure. Additionally, Wilo’s solution ensured better operational efficiency, resulting in reduced maintenance costs and improved reliability.

The success of the project has strengthened BCCL’s confidence in Wilo’s capabilities and is expected to lead to future business opportunities in other mining operations.
