Tubachi–Babaleshwar Lift Irrigation Project

Tubachi–Babaleshwar Lift Irrigation Scheme, Karnataka

The Tubachi–Babaleshwar Lift Irrigation Scheme is a major water infrastructure project undertaken by Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Limited (KNNL) in Bagalkot district, Karnataka. The project is designed to lift large volumes of water to higher elevations for irrigation, enabling agricultural development in drought-prone and water-scarce regions. Lift irrigation schemes of this magnitude demand extremely high-capacity pumping systems capable of operating reliably under high heads and continuous duty conditions.

To meet these demanding requirements, some of the largest metallic volute pumps have been deployed as part of the scheme’s main pumping station. These pumps are engineered to handle exceptionally high discharge rates while delivering water against very high static heads. The installation plays a critical role in ensuring dependable water delivery to the command area, supporting sustainable agriculture and long-term water security in the region.

Metallic Volute Pumps for Lift Irrigation Application

Total Pumps: 2 Nos

Application: Lift Irrigation Water Transfer

Location: Bagalkot District, Karnataka

Metallic volute pumps are specifically designed for ultra-high-capacity and high-head applications such as large lift irrigation projects. Their robust volute casing construction enables them to withstand extreme hydraulic forces while maintaining stable flow characteristics. The pumps installed for the Tubachi–Babaleshwar scheme are optimized for high efficiency and continuous operation, ensuring reliable performance under demanding load conditions.

From an operational and infrastructure perspective, the use of very high-power motors and low-speed operation reduces mechanical stress, enhances reliability, and extends equipment life. The deployment of such large-scale pumping equipment underscores the engineering complexity of modern irrigation projects and highlights the suitability of advanced pumping solutions for large government-led water resource initiatives. This reference stands as a benchmark for high-head, high-discharge lift irrigation pumping systems in India.
