IPS Bandra Project

IPS Bandra Project

The Bandra Influent Pumping Station (IPS) Project, executed for the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), is a critical wastewater infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving sewage handling and transfer within Mumbai’s sewer network. The system is designed to lift large volumes of preliminary treated wastewater to downstream effluent pumping stations for further treatment.

This project involved the replacement of existing Sulzer pumps with a highly customized Wilo solution. The key challenge was to match the existing infrastructure, including suction/delivery configuration, direction of rotation, and a complex vertical execution system with a 16.3-meter cardan shaft, without any major modification to the civil structure.

Application & Pumps Used

Sewage Pumping System:

  • Application: Influent Wastewater Lifting
  • Segment: Wastewater / Water Management

Pump Solutions Supplied:

  • Non-Clog Vertical Centrifugal Sewage Pumps

Total Pumps Installed: 4

Wilo’s pumping solution is designed to efficiently lift large volumes of sewage from deep underground installations (approx. 40 meters below ground level) to the effluent pumping station. The non-clog design ensures smooth handling of wastewater with solids, minimizing the risk of blockage and ensuring uninterrupted operation.

A key engineering achievement in this project was the precise replacement of existing pumps, including integration with a long cardan shaft system supported by plummer blocks at intermediate stages. Detailed site studies, CFD analysis, and hydraulic optimization enabled Wilo to enhance pump efficiency while maintaining full compatibility with the existing setup.

The system ensures reliable operation during peak load conditions, especially during monsoon periods when sewage flow increases significantly. With robust design and high-capacity performance, the solution strengthens Mumbai’s wastewater management infrastructure and improves system resilience in critical conditions.
