Conexão Cristina strengthens water security for more than 1.5 million people in Goiânia and its metropolitan region

Goiânia, Brazil. At Wilo, water is more than a resource — it is the basis of health, dignity and opportunity. As one of the world’s leading manufacturers of pumps and pump systems and a pioneer in sustainable and intelligent water solutions, Wilo supports cities and communities with reliable technologies that improve access to clean water and help create sustainable urban living spaces. The Conexão Cristina project in Brazil is one example of this commitment in action.

Connecting water systems for greater resilience

The project integrates the João Leite and Meia Ponte water supply systems in Goiânia, increasing operational flexibility and strengthening resilience across the metropolitan region. For decades, many neighborhoods faced unreliable water supply, especially during drought periods, when communities were left without consistent access to safe, treated water.

At the center of the project is the João Leite booster station, equipped with four high-performance Wilo split-case pumps (Wilo-SCP) rated at 700 HP each. With a maximum total capacity of 2,000 l/s, the pumping system helps ensure reliable and efficient water transport across the network.

The broader infrastructure includes a 5.2 km steel pipeline with a diameter of 1.2 meters and a maximum flow rate of 2,124 l/s. With a total investment of BRL 72.3 million, the project forms part of a wider modernization and capacity expansion initiative for water and sewage infrastructure in Goiânia, including reservoir upgrades, 36.4 km of additional distribution networks, and the duplication of a 3.3 km treated water pipeline.

Improving access to safe drinking water

Overall, the project improves water security for more than 1.5 million people in Goiânia, northwestern Aparecida de Goiânia, Goianira and Trindade, while laying the foundation for reliable supply to another 500,000 residents by 2038.

Beyond its technical performance, Conexão Cristina has significant social impact. By strengthening supply in historically underserved areas, it helps reduce vulnerability during drought periods, improve public health and support more equitable urban development. It also reflects Wilo’s commitment to improving access to clean water and contributes to SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.

Strong collaboration across project partners

The project was realized through close collaboration between all partners. Our partner, Starsan Construtora e Locações, was responsible for the construction of the João Leite booster station and the installation of the technical equipment, while WILO Brasil Ltda. supplied the pumping technology. Wilo extends its sincere thanks to Starsan Construtora e Locações for their trust and cooperation throughout the realization of this important project.

With Booster João Leite, Wilo is helping deliver more than infrastructure — it is supporting resilience, quality of life and sustainable urban development in a growing metropolitan region.
